Jeffrey’s terrific 2 part conversation with Dr. Roxanne Daleo, a Health Educator who taught at Harvard University Health Services and is the founder of MindWorks for Children.
Dr. Daleo was trained in relaxation and stress reduction techniques at the Harvard Medical School, Division of Behavioral Medicine, and she also studied the use of symbols for healing from the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland.
For the past fifteen years, Dr. Daleo has worked as clinician, instructor and consultant in a wide variety of business and health care settings, and she has extensive experience working with children and adults. Additionally, she has designed and produced audiovisual programs for patient education, health promotion, and creative arts therapies and has developed play therapy programs for the chronic and terminally ill. Dr. Daleo also conducts stress management workshops for professionals and develops health promotion programs for educators and health care practitioners.
MindWorks for Children is a special resource for parents, children, teachers and caregivers to help children and families better cope with normal social and academic pressures children face in school, tests and sports competition, as well as, experiences like nightmares, sickness, hospitalizations, family changes or loss.
Stress affects children and adults as part of everyday life. It affects our health, our mood, and our general sense of confidence and well-being we need to greet each day. At times there are special situations which require extra coping skills in the hospital, classrooms and at home.
MindWorks for Children has been used successfully by health care professionals, teachers and parents in hospitals, schools and homes and in the clinic and can be used before or after a specific medical or surgical procedure. Before surgery the tapes can be used to help calm an apprehensive child with hands-on skills. After surgery they teach ways to reduce body tension. Siblings of the hospitalized can also benefit from these tapes.
In the classroom MindWorks for Children is a unique study recess that clears the mind and improves concentration so children can relax and learn. MindWorks for Children taps right brain function of creativity and problem solving.
In the home: MindWorks for Children fosters quiet, quality time with your child so you can listen together to the relaxing recordings or establish ways for your child to self-soothe.
MindWorks for Children can help parents and professionals reduce worries and fears in children by teaching children how to strengthen their own ability to handle life’s challenges — in school, play, and relationships by providing guided relaxation and meditation training designed to combine stress reduction techniques and effective coping strategies with home practice audio programs which help children help themselves feel better, reduce pain and calm down.
As a therapist and teacher, Dr. Daleo specializes in stress management through creative arts and play therapies. Her training is cutting edge in the field of mind/body science. She also uses biofeedback training in her individual sessions which provide children ways to learn to calm their bodies and fears, improve concentration, and develop greater confidence and creative approaches to problem solving.
Here’s what professionals are saying about the audio programs:
“MindWorks for children is a breakthrough in mind/body education, emotional literacy and compassion. Dr. Daleo’s excellent tapes can help your child sleep more peacefully, find love and creativity within, overcome fear and express their fullest potential. These delightful, comforting, powerful tapes should find a place in every home, school and clinical setting, where bringing forth the wholeness of the child are a conscious concern.â€
Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., scientist, professor, leader in the mind/body movement, author of the national bestseller, “Minding the Body, Mending the Mindâ€
“We think these tapes are a wonderful resource for young families, childcare centers, and schools. Dr. Daleo’s tapes encourage children to use their imaginations to create a beautiful resting place of their own. The journeys are filled with joyful music, singing birds, and soothing sounds. The images are created by the enchanting rhythm and rhyme in the stories. And, when parents are involved, this approach has added the added benefit of being a good way for them to connect with their children.â€
Child Health Alert Magazine
“These tapes are a wonderful way for children to learn about relaxation, meditation, and taking care of themselves. Dr. Roxanne’s voice is perfect for relaxation, lovely, friendly, and very effective. I highly recommend the MindWork’s tapes to promote health – awareness in children.â€
Dr. Christine Northrup, Author, “Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdomâ€
I think you will find my conversation with Dr. Daleo most uplifting and encouraging as a way to create better futures for today’s children in very realistic and concrete ways with open ended resources and creativity.
