Art and Physics

leonardshlain1.jpgJeffrey converses with Dr. Leonard Shlain, Chairman of Laproscopic Surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and Associate Professor of Surgery at The University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Shlain is also author of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image and Sex, Time, and Power: How Women’s Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution, and the subject of today’s podcast: Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light.

leonardshlainbook1.jpgDr. Shlain lectures internationally and has been featured on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and NPR. I caught Dr. Shlain upon the return of a trip to The Museum of Modern Art in New York where he was lecturing about the connections between Art and Physics of which as The Los Angeles Times says:

“A tour de force….A brilliant, accessible, and visionary look at the most revolutionary artists and scientists from the golden age of Greece to the present.”

In this conversation I encountered a man whose love for learning and expansion has never waned and who has shared in books that explore in detail his discoveries and learning with academic excellence in an accessible manner. As a medical doctor and scientist Leonard brings a perspective to understanding the flow of art, consciousness and science that is historical and deeply insightful, and also expansive and provocative. He eternally asks the big questions, the “Why” behind the veil that inspires his readers to think in ways they may have never considered, and to become engaged in the sometimes obscure language that characterizes so much of modern and post-modern art.

I think you will find this conversation of immeasurable value of recognizing the depth of awareness that true art has brought to the cultural landscape throughout history and is still doing to this very day.
